DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT
"Céline on a Cloudy Day" is an 18-minute short film about a French/Turkish actress preparing for a self-introduction in an audition while her estranged father visits her. While the film delves into themes of identity, and self-representation, at its core, it’s about longing for connection.

I met Péline, the lead actress, during auditions for another short film project. Born to a French mother and a Turkish father, Péline's own journey as an actress resonated deeply with questions of identity and connection. The more we discussed characters, our relationships with our parents, and themes of distance and longing, the more I started question my own place in an in-between state myself. Her experience navigating between cultures prompted reflection on themes of "racial passing" and identity politics.

As an immigrant myself, living away from my family for the past seven years, I found myself thinking a lot about how identity politics has an impact on an individual’s psychology, especially when it’s subtle, and “cloudy”.

For both Péline and me, "Céline on a Cloudy Day" became a vehicle for exploring the emotional and spiritual distance one experiences with family and self.
